Thayer's Gull

Field Trip: Los Angeles River Gulls

Sat, Jan 17, 2026

Leader: Grigory Heaton

Please join us for a gull-focused field trip to the Los Angeles river. What the central LA river near Vernon lacks in ecological integrity it makes up for in hosting some of the best gull diversity in southern California, with at least 9 species plus several hybrids regularly occurring in winter. We can expect to encounter at least some of regionally uncommon species like Thayer’s (Iceland) Gull and Lesser Black-backed Gull, with rarer species always a small possibility.

Expect about 1.5 miles of walking, most of which will be on a paved bike path.

All individuals under the age of 18 participating in a LAB sponsored event must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or an adult designated as responsible for their well-being including their safety, behavior, and compliance with all applicable rules and regulations during the course of the event, program, activity, etc.

Currently signup is limited to LAB members, who will receive an email with instructions for how to sign up.
