This talk will describe how to sift through various bird sounds heard in the mountains of southern California to help you distinguish various species by their vocalizations. We will concentrate on species that cause frequent confusion such as Green-tailed Towhees and Thick-billed Fox Sparrows; Townsend’s Solitaire, Cassin’s Finch, and Purple Finch; Dark-eyed Junco and Chipping sparrow, and more if time permits. We will make extensive use of audio recordings and spectrograms to point out key features to listen for, how obtaining your own recordings can help you learn the sounds better, and briefly discuss simple ways to make your own recordings.
