The Vireonidae is a rather small bird family, yet some of our most difficult field identification issues involve these small gleaners of forests, woodlands, and dense thickets. We’ll review the identification characters of California’s vireos, while stressing the importance of understanding their seasonal status, distribution, migration patterns, and vagrancy, and touch on some as-yet unresolved taxonomic issues involving our vireos.
